I have heard very, very good things about DYSON vacuums.. I work at KOHLs and the ANIMAL was on sale for $549.00 the guy had a Kohl's 30% coupon for being a credit card customer so he saved around $160 AND he had another housewares coupon for 15% off housewares/appliances.... So, the vacuum was just under $300 !

*You may have to wait for the 30, 20 or 15 % scratch-off's AND be a KOHLS credit card customer.. However, it's worth the wait... Also, KOHLS does match price other dept stores..

*Just another TIP no matter what vacuum you decide to buy if it comes has an EXTENDED WARRANTY you can purchase DO IT.. I bought the one on my HOOVER SAVVY which is a GREAT vacuum by the way..

I bought the extra 3 yr. I have a total clean/check on my vacuum every 6 months.. It's like having a brand new vacuum ! I usually just "lie" and tell the customer serivce rep that something isn't working.. It gets cleaned/checked and in a week my vacuum is brand new ! The extended warranty was around $100 !

*The HOOVER service center is about 20 min from my house !

I have 2 toddler and a massive shedding dog.... My vacuum works very, very well... It cost about $200-$250 and ranked in the 2002 or 03 Consumer Reports about the same as a DYSON at a fraction of the cost ! Even if you buy the extended warranty you're still doing better than the DYSON ! It has onboard attachements, a high/med/low carpet setting AND carpet/bare floors...

When I got my carpets cleaned I vacuumed BEFORE and the tech showed me a palm size mound of hair from the stairs that I didn't get to BEFORE he showed up ! It has two filters and it's bagless...

The downsides are the cord is too short but, I use and extention cord so that problem is solved..It can sometimes be messy to empty I usually do mine outside or in the trash in the garage. It's alittle heavy and the filter(s) are expensive to replace..

Although, I've found the HEPA filter online for around $23 or $32 for the HEPA and the small other one.... on AMAZON.com... In the stores the HEPA only is around $40 but, last about 2 yrs.

Whatever vacuum you choose good luck
References :
I have the Dyson Animal. I love it. It was worth the money. We have a cat and a dog and two children. I do use the attachments that come with it. One is perfect for the floors that are not carpet. Another works well on stairs if you have them. It is very powerful. I really like the dyson.
References :
Own a Dyson.

From my own personal experience of owning a cleaning company I found that purchasing a home vacuum cleaner you get a lot of attachments you really never use but you pay for them anyway. I suggest going to a janitorial supply store and purchase a commercial vacuum cleaner. They cost about the same but are more rugged and last longer. Plus, you don't clutter up your closet with a bunch of attachments you never use.
