How to choose a new upright Vacuum?

My year old Bissell vacuum is starting to not work so well. It has way less suction than it used to and it makes weird sounds. Our upstairs is all hardwood & linoleum & so all I’m using it for my crazy 6′ X 9′ rug in the living room. Maybe all that cat hair is extra hard on vacuums? I don’t know why I can’t find one that will last. The one I had before this was a Eureka and it still had suction, but the rotating brush in the front broke out after 3 years of use. And it was used in an all carpeted house.

What I love about my vacuum most is the compartment in the front that lets me easily dump out the dust instead of having to change a bag. But how to I search through the various upright vacuum cleaners to find one that isn’t going to die after a year? Some of them say they are designed for many years, but how do I know what is real in those advertisements? Can any of you tell me what you use and how long it has worked for you? Thanks.

I have been married 20yrs and we are a military family and so we move a lot and been overseas twice. So you can imagine how many vacuums I have bought in that time.
I bought a new vacuum last year in February the day after my son’s birthday party. I was trying to get the rug vacuumed for his party and where the belt spins, the belt sliced into the plastic on the vacuum. Not fixable. So that meant I needed a new vacuum.
So anyway, the new one I got I LOVE!!! Let me tell you, I never thought I could be in love with a vacuum but I LOVE this thing!
I bought a Dirt Devil D2 Reaction. It has a double "tornado" as my kids call it. It’s super easy to empty. The crevice attachement is the longest one I’ve ever seen and so it works great under the recliner of my sectional!
And let me tell you, it picks up so much more dirt than my old one!
And it’s reasonably priced.
One day I was in Walmart and happened to go down the vacuum isle and this woman was looking at vacuums and asked me if I could recommend one and I showed her the one I had bought and showed her all the great features and she said it sounded perfect and put it in her cart and another woman witnessed this discussion and came over and said wow I think you’ve got me sold too! You should be their spokesperson! HAHA! So she bought one too!
I’ve provided Target’s link. You can buy it at Target, Walmart and other stores that sell vacuums.
Good luck!

Check Consumer Reports. Right now they seem to like the Hoover windtunnel upright best.

Check out Consumer Reports magazine, they ran an article on vacuums this past year and rated uprights. The easiest way to find the magazine may be to go to your local library and look through the issues they have on the shelf. I think you can buy access on line, but the Library is free.

I got a Dyson for Valentine’s Day last year (it’s what I asked for). It is wonderful! My neighbor borrowed it the other day and couldn’t wait to find out what kind it was. It is bagless, has great suction, and empties in the front. The compartment that has the dust is clear so you can easily see when it needs to be dumped.

Have you checked the belt, looked for a clog somewhere? You do need to do maintenance on them now and then! You can take it to a vacuum repair shop too. If you really want a good vacuum, go to a vacuum repair shop or a vacuum cleaner dealer store. None of them at the discount stores are worth a darn! Find something with a metal fan blade, instead of plastic, and a commercial model would even be better. It will cost you more initially, but in the long run it will not need to be replaced for years!!! I cleaned houses for 14 yrs. 5 days a week 3-4 houses a day, using the same vacuum cleaner!!!

    i agree with "rkhuot".
you should keep your receipt and packaging for any new household appliance for at least a year. cause in some cases when you purchase from a major retailer like "Sears" they will just simply replace the item you purchased even if it is a year old.
always look too see what the retailers return policy is and if whether or not that have a small appliance repair service.
as for brands of vacum cleaners that i think work the best.
i generally stick with tried and true brands like "hoover" and "sears Kenmore " for the reason of being able to return those particular brands as well as being able too find independent repair shops that will sometimes defer the cost of repair to the warranty on the product.

My Mom , my daughters and myself all own an Oreck and we all love them! So light even my mom could use at age 85. They pick up real well and go from carpet to tile or wood without any adjustment. We all bought the lowest price one.

Consumer Reports is usually good reference.

We bought a Sears Kenmore Blue Moon Cannister vacuum this summer when we tiled our entire house and ripped out all of the carpet. With the hard floor attachment it works very well. It also has low emissions due to the fact it uses a bag to catch the stuff and also has a HEPA filter.

It is a pretty stout vacuum and all of the attachments and stuff are in a storage compartment on top of the main body.

We also have an upright that you can turn the beater bar off and use on hard floors. It works ok, but if you’re going to use it on hard floors it is best just to take the belt off of the damn thing because the "stopper" isn’t an electric switch, but a mechanical gizmo that pulls the belt back so it can’t make contact with the motor. When you hit furniture or a wall, it pops back into place. That feature was not very useful and would have been much better if it were an electrical switch.

Just remember, more $ doesn’t necessiarily mean a better vacuum.

dyson is the market no i and invertor of bagless cleaning, i dont like the machine myself but load of people have them and seem to get on with them, i prefer a comapct hoover instead of an upright, i find the upright model so 60’s so have no time for them….at last dyson do a compact model, and i used it the other week it worked fine but hard to justify £200, when a good electrolux is £30-60, which will last the same time

p.s dyson can up with the double "tornado" and was laughed out of hoovers office so he set up his own firm to make it
no they all have some sort of double "tornado in them
